近年從內地著名大學「拔尖」挑選出來的城大本科生，在學術成績及課外活動方面均表現出色，成為本地及海外大學招攬的研究生對象。
數學系的菲立普希阿雷講座教授，獲羅馬尼亞布加勒斯特大學頒授Doctor Honoris Causa榮譽博士學位，以表揚他在研究及學術領域上的卓越成就。
由城大領導的三個應用研究項目，在研究資助局（以下簡稱研資局）2004-05年度中央撥款的角逐中，共獲得1,104萬港元撥款，是大學教育資助委員會資助院校中獲撥款最多的院校。該三個研究項目所獲得的撥款，佔研資局2004至05年度中央撥款總額2,600萬港元的42.5%，充份顯示城大在應用研究領域的貢獻及院校合作研究項目上擔當的領導角色。
