CityU won a Green Office Award in the 2003 Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards, an annual event organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee, HKSAR, to recognize organizations with substantial achievements in environmental management.

CityU's Facilities Management Office (FMO) Director Mr K Y Wong received a Certificate of Merit, under the category of Green Office Award, from Mr Robert Law, Director of Environmental Protection, HKSAR, 16 February, at the Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards Presentation in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event was officiated by Dr Sarah Liao, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works.

The Green Office Award, (one of the Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards jointly organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, and the Hong Kong Productivity Council), is designed to recognize organizations in Hong Kong that have demonstrated a commitment to building an environmentally friendly office culture. Some important indicators include commitment shown by an organization's senior management to environmental objectives; accomplishments in environmental programmes; and how well the message of the importance of the environment has been communicated to stakeholders.

CityU has become a forerunner in environmental protection among local universities. FMO was awarded the prestigious Gold Wastewi$e Logo in November last year for achieving all the environmental targets of the Wastewi$e Scheme, under the Environmental Protection Department, HKSAR. Before that, FMO was also the first among local tertiary institutions to receive the ISO 14001 Certificate issued by Bureau Veritas Quality International in November 2002, in recognition of its commitment to environmental management.

"My colleagues have done a great job in environmental management," said Mr Wong. "I hope the award will help to promote environmental awareness among local tertiary institutions."
