Organized for the fourth year by the Offices of Institutional Advancement, the Teachers Update Course (TUC) 2001 will be held on 19 June and on 27-29 June at CityU. Among the 12 sessions to be covered this year are three new subjects: Chinese Language & Culture, Web Teaching and Teaching Enhancement. Other subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Studies, Economics and Finance, Principles of Accounts, Use of English and Student Counselling.

The TUC was first launched in June 1998 in an effort to promote closer links and mutual collaboration with secondary schools. "The TUC provides practical assistance for teachers in local secondary schools to update themselves on both subject content and pedagogy. This CityU initiative has been highly commended by educators and practitioners in the field," said Professor Y S Wong , Vice-President (Institutional Advancement).

The courses are offered free of charge by University staff specializing in the selected areas. "The TUC is a good opportunity for secondary educators to discover the complimentary teaching resources available at CityU. It also provides a forum for exchanging valuable ideas," said Dr Aaron Ho, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science.

Around 2,730 teachers from hundreds of schools have taken part in the TUC over the past three years. Dr Joe Hong , Senior Teaching Development Coordinator in the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching said, "In a knowledge-based society, the goal of education has become more focused than ever on cultivating learners with lifelong learning skills."
