A new scholarship scheme set up by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) offers talented applicants help with tuition fees and promotes diverse learning opportunities such as overseas exchanges and leadership training.

Local secondary school students will be awarded either Institutional Scholarships or Dean’s Scholarships under the “CityU Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents”.

To qualify, applicants will have to meet CityU’s academic criteria by performing strongly in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) or GCE “A” Level (GCEAL) / International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB).

Also, they should have successfully gained admission to a government-funded undergraduate programme at CityU through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) or Non-JUPAS.

Recipients of the Institutional Scholarships can receive up to HK$60,000 each year and a one-off exchange scholarship of HK$25,000. Recipients of the Dean’s Scholarships can receive up to HK$50,000 each year. The scholarships are renewable for those students who meet the academic requirements during their studies. (Please refer to Table 1 for details.)

In addition to sponsoring tuition fees, the scholarship scheme will arrange learning opportunities such as the Global Work Attachment Programme, academic mentorship, training workshops and lectures on leadership development and career planning.

Wan Ching-yin, a scholarship recipient in 2016 and now a Year 2 student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, said CityU had provided him with a lot of learning opportunities outside the classroom. The sponsorship enabled him to attend National University of Singapore as an exchange student for one semester last year.

“It was my first time to travel abroad,” Ching-yin said. “I made a lot of new friends from around the world, especially at my hostel. I learned totally new skills like stage lighting and using audio equipment when we organised cultural and art activities together.”

Chung Tsz-wai, another scholarship recipient and a Year 2 student in the Department of Media and Communication, said such opportunities and support were an excellent way for students to develop.

“For me, I gained a great deal from a mentorship programme last year. The mentors were all successful corporate executives who listened patiently to our needs and offered valuable advice.”
