New postgrads get oriented at CityU

Orientation ceremonies at the start of the new academic year extended a warm welcome to postgraduate students at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
 
Close to 200 participants attended the orientation cum awards presentation event for new research degree students organised by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS) on 17 September.
 
Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Acting Vice-President (Research and Technology) and Acting Dean of Graduate Studies, said in his opening speech at the ceremony that he was delighted to announce that CityU had progressed remarkably in world and Asian university rankings in recent years, and he reminded students to be prepared for the challenges ahead.
 
At the awards ceremony, 22 Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarships; 4 Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies Scholarships; 7 Outstanding Research Thesis Awards; and 110 Outstanding Academic Performance Awards were presented.
 
In addition, SGS organised an orientation for students on taught postgraduate programmes in the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall on 31 August. The programme introduced new students to the learning environment at CityU and the range of student support services on offer. Close to 1,000 students attended.
Following a speech by Professor Ip at this ceremony there were talks on key issues related to taught postgraduate studies at CityU, the services offered by Student Development Services, the activities of the CityU Postgraduate Association, and useful advice for non-local students.
