Final-year students in the Department of Marketing were honoured for their outstanding consultancy work at an awards ceremony on 5 January.

Students taking the Advanced Marketing Seminar were split into 16 teams to provide consultancy services for four well-known corporations, namely, the CASH Group, the Dairy Farm Group Limited, Ferti Jewelry and Fortress, between September and November 2004.

For the CASH Group, for example, students contributed to marketing strategies and analysis for online trading development, DIY furniture, consumer electronics, and teenagers’ cosmetics and aroma gift sets. “The students have given us creative insights and innovative suggestions,” said Ms Joan Kwok, Executive Director of the CASH Group, who commended the students for their practical recommendations, devotion and professionalism.

For Ferti Jewelry, students conducted research and analysis on business strategies, franchising plans, the company’s competitor and consumer behaviour. “The students did an excellent job in presenting their ideas. I’m impressed by their mature and responsible attitude,” said Ms Joanne Chan, Business Controller for Ferti.

Ms Elman Lee, Marketing Manager for Fortress, and Mr Claude Sorbello, Group Procurement Director (First Choice) for the Dairy Farm Group, also attended the ceremony. Representatives from the companies said they look forward to future cooperation with CityU faculty and students.

The projects offered students hands-on experience and an opportunity to experience the real business world. “Not only have we applied academic knowledge that we learned, we have also enhanced our communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills,” said Miss Gigi Leung, a participating student. “It was our great pleasure to work with the prestigious companies and learn from them.” On behalf of all 89 participating students, Miss Leung thanked their instructor, Mr Alex Tham, for his enthusiastic teaching and coaching.

Other guests at the ceremony included Professor K K Lai, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business; Dr S H Ko, Head of the Division of Commerce; Dr Zhou Nan, Head of the Department of Marketing; and Professor Oliver Yau, Chair Professor of Marketing.
