CityUHK runners unite for excellence

Over 800 members of the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) community united in the highly anticipated Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2024, held on 21 January, as part of the celebrations for CityUHK’s 30th anniversary as a university. CityUHK runners again ran with students with special education needs to promote social inclusion.

The CityUHK Delegation, composed of students, staff and alumni, infused the race with enthusiasm and solidarity. Among the runners who registered, 335 ran the 10-kilometre race, while 270 and 207 ran the half marathon and full marathon, respectively.

Seven students with different learning needs from Sam Shui Natives Association Lau Pun Cheung School and Mary Rose School, after several rounds of training with CityUHK runners, paired with them in the Inclusive Run, which is part of the “Sports Ambassadors Programme” organised by Student Development Services (SDS) to promote greater social integration through sports. This showcases CityUHK’s commitment to engaging with the community to bring about positive change.

Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) and Chairperson of the 30th Anniversary Organising Committee, cheered on the athletes. Joining the 10-kilometre race were Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise), Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung, Dean of Students, Professor Isabel Yan Kit-ming, Associate Provost (Student Life), and Dr Larry Ng Ching-wah, SDS Director.

During the races, the Delegation’s morale was boosted significantly by the continuous cheering of the support team. In various categories, multiple team members from the CityUHK Delegation achieved impressive results.
