CityU Congratulates Alumna Grace Lau Mo-sheung on Winning the AKF Senior Championships

Professor Freddy Boey Yin Chiang, President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), together with members of the University community, have congratulated alumna Grace Lau Mo-sheung on winning a gold medal in the Women’s Kata event in the Asian Karate Federation (AKF) Senior Championships 2023 held in Malaysia on 21 July. Grace has made history by winning the first Gold Medal in this championship for Hong Kong.

“Grace is the pride of Hong Kong and a hero at CityU. We will continue to promote innovative, inspirational and interactive learning, and create the right academic environment for students to reach their potential to become global citizens,” said Professor Boey.

Back into 2021, when Grace was competing in the Tokyo Olympics, CityU students, faculty and alumni gathered on campus to watch the live broadcast of the competition to cheer her on. After winning the Olympic bronze medal, she returned to her alma mater for a celebratory gathering, sharing with CityU student athletes her learning and competition experience, and encouraging them to persevere in their beliefs and strive for excellence.

Since the establishment of the “Student Athletes Admission Scheme” in 1997, CityU has admitted more than 1,200 student-athletes to the University, including Grace. Prior to her graduation from CityU, she led the CityU Women’s Karate Team to win the team gold medal in karate competitions among local universities. She was also named USFHK Sportswoman of the Year in 2014 and 2015.

In the past 15 years, CityU has won seven out of 12 Grand Slams in the local sports league, in which 13 local major tertiary institutions, including the eight UGC-funded universities, participate.
