City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) excelled in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, with seven subjects ranked among the world’s top 100 and two ranked among the world’s top 50 and Asia’s top 10. Law again secured 2nd place in Hong Kong and 7th in Asia. Additionally, Business and Economics was ranked in the top 3 in Hong Kong and top 10 in Asia for the first time.

CityUHK’s ranking in the THE World University Rankings 2026 was recently adjusted after the announcement in October, climbing to a record 73rd from the original 75th position — up five places from 78th last year. In the latest subject rankings, seven CityUHK subjects were ranked among the world’s top 100: Business & Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.

The rankings of five of these disciplines moved up this year: Business and Economics, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences and Social Sciences. Life Sciences recorded the highest growth, climbing from 96th place last year to 80th this year. Law, and Business and Economics continued to be ranked in the global top 50, with the former ranking 41st globally and 7th in Asia, and the latter rising to 36th globally and 10th in Asia, reflecting CityUHK’s continuous progress in various academic fields and its internationally recognised capabilities.

Among local universities, CityUHK’s Law and Life Sciences continued to rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in Hong Kong, whereas Business and Economics was ranked 3rd for the first time.

The THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026 methodology is designed to evaluate universities using a refined version of the overall World University Rankings 2026 methodology. It assesses performance across 11 major subject areas using 18 indicators grouped into five core pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. Together, these indicators provide a comprehensive view of academic and research excellence worldwide.

In recent years, CityUHK has excelled in various global subject rankings, with 20 subjects ranked in the global top 100 and four subjects in the global top 50 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The University also had 27 academic subjects ranked in the global top 100 in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025. Three subjects — namely Library & Information Science, Public Administration, and Automation & Control — have entered the global top 10, while 12 subjects rank first in Hong Kong.
