CityUHK holds New Year’s Day flag-raising ceremony

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held a New Year’s Day flag-raising ceremony today (1 January) at the University Circle to mark the beginning of the new year.

The ceremony was officiated by Dr Chung Shui-ming, GBS, JP, Pro-Chancellor of CityUHK and Professor the Hon Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK. They were joined by Council members, Court members, the Foundation Board of Governors, senior management, faculty, staff, and student representatives to welcome the new year.

Among the attendees were several Council members, namely, Mr David Ho Chi-hoo, BBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of the Council, Mr Charles Chin Ying-on, Treasurer; Council members Mr Gary Lock Wai-tak, Mr Robert Lui Chi-wang, Mr Rex Wong Siu-han, JP, Mr Justin Wong Tak-ho, Dr Steve Chuang Tzu-hsiung, JP, Ms Grace Yu Ho-wun, MH, Mr Gabriel Ho Kai-pong, Professor Ray Cheung Chak-chung and Professor Wang Jianping; and Court members Professor Gary Cheng Faat-ting, Professor Albert Ip Yuk-keung and Dr Wong Chun-hong, SBS, BBS.

Professor Ngai remarked that over the past year, CityUHK has remained firmly committed to its core mission, proactively strengthening international connections, consolidating its global academic reputation and rankings, and leading advances in scientific and technological research. He noted that the University has continued to serve as a vital bridge linking the nation, Asia, and the wider world, injecting fresh momentum into academic and research development.

Looking ahead to the new year, Professor Ngai added that CityUHK will continue to uphold excellence, contribute to Hong Kong’s prosperity and progress, and further reinforce the city’s position as an international hub for higher education.

The ceremony is attended by about 200 guests and members of the University community.

Nearly 200 CityUHK members attended the event, including Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research), Professor Kevin Downing, Secretary to Council and Court, Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice-President (Talent and International Strategy), Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement), and Miss Maggie Chau, Vice-President (Administration), together with faculty, staff, and student representatives. They witnessed the raising of the National Flag, the Regional Flag, and the University Flag at the University Circle, marking the start of the new year.

The flag-raising ceremony was carried out by the CityUHK student flag-raising team, with student representatives serving as masters of ceremonies. The solemn and dignified event symbolised CityUHK’s commitment to excellence in the new year and its mission to nurture outstanding talent for society.
