About 200 students and alumni of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) gathered on campus for the charity event Famine 24 from 10 to 11 October.

Professor Way Kuo, University President, hosted the opening ceremony and cheered on the participants. Dr Raymond Chan Kwok-hong, Dean of Students, also joined in.

Organised by the 30th Social Service Team of the CityU Students’ Union, Famine 24 promotes awareness about global poverty and hunger. The participants abstained from food for 24 hours to raise money for the charity World Vision Hong Kong.

“We need to cherish our natural resources, including food and energy,” said Professor Kuo in his opening remarks. “In a globalised world, Hong Kong will be affected by incidents in other parts of the world. We should take a broader view and contribute to the world.”

The theme of the annual event for this year is East Africa. Talks, games, and other activities were organised for the participants to experience the life and problems found in East Africa.
