More than 200 teams comprising secondary students from more than 100 Hong Kong and Macau schools participated in the 12th Hong Kong and Macau Interschool Straw Competition 2009, organised by City University of Hong Kong Physics and Materials Science Society of the Students’ Union on 26 April. The competition aims to inspire secondary students to apply physics knowledge to daily life and promote an interest in science through creative experiments.

The theme at this year’s event was “City Shooter”. Contestants constructed their own launchers with 150 straws. The launcher that propelled a ball furthest to pass through a target was declared the winner. SKH St Benedict’s School and the Affiliated School of the University of Macau won the championship in the senior and junior groups respectively.
