Two CityU enterprises have been recognized for excellence in industrial performance. DynaCity Technology (HK) Ltd, headed by Dr Sun Dong of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, and SoftEnable Technology Ltd, under the leadership of Professor Horace Ip of the Department of Computer Science, received the Machinery and Equipment Design Award, and the Certificate of Merit in Technological Achievement, respectively, at the presentation ceremony of the 2003 Hong Kong Awards for Industry, 27 October.

The award came as a huge boost to DynaCity, a six-month "young" company formed under CityU Enterprises Ltd, the extension arm of the University that helps to commercialize research outcomes and turns innovative research projects into viable companies. DynaCity's flagship product, an integrated and digitized motor control and driving device, was commended by the judging panel as widely applicable, user friendly, and "having a big market potential in China where access to this type of technology is very limited". The company has established a clientele in the Pearl River Delta, where the surface mount industry is booming and demand for low- cost, customized motion controller products is escalating. Dr Sun, DynaCity's Chief Executive Officer, believes that the award might help open new doors beyond the region.

A broad spectrum of unique products
SoftEnable, also formed under CityU Enterprises Ltd, was recognized for its unique Computer-Assisted Orthognathic Surgical Planning System (CASSOS), surgical simulation software that helps restore proper functioning in patients with dentofacial bone anomalies. The judging panel commented, "The company has developed a special algorithm as a core technology of the first simulation system
for orthorgnathic analysis in Asia." SoftEnable also boasts other workflow management software solutions, such as GarmentOffice Deluxe (GO.D), tailor-made for the garment industry, and Collaborative Management Solution (CMS), targeted at trading and manufacturing industries such as electronics, gifts and premiums, and toys.

The Hong Kong Awards for industry is an annual event led by the HKSAR government to recognize successful practices and strategies in industrial performance. The Organizing Committee comprises a conglomerate of seven trade related bodies, such as the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Trade and Industry Department, and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. This year, there were 74 winners out of 262 entries, from a wide range of industries spanning from toys to telecommunications. Officiating the awards presentation ceremony this year, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR
government, Mr Tung Chee Hwa , echoed the spirit of the award, "It is not the size of your business, but the way you run your business that matters."
