Research and postgraduate education were the focus of CityU's ninth University Development Forum, held on 18 September. The open presentation gave four focus groups the opportunity to present their observations and members of staff the opportunity to provide feedback on the recommendations.

"The purpose of the review is to propose strategies for the University to strengthen its research culture and capability and to enhance the quality of postgraduate education," said Professor P S Chung, Vice-President (Research).

The focus groups consisted of representatives from Faculties, Schools, the College, the CityU Postgraduate Association and relevant offices. The groups reviewed the current situation at CityU and presented a summary of their recommendations for reinforcing the following areas:

  • Taught postgraduate degrees
  • Research degrees
  • Applied R&D
  • Research infrastructure and culture

A lively discussion followed the presentation. Professor Chung said comments would be incorporated into the recommendations and submitted to the University management for inclusion in the strategic plan for 2002 and beyond.
