CityU Gallery 360 debuts cutting-edge technology in Hong Kong
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is proud to announce the opening of Gallery 360, a technological advanced facility featuring the groundbreaking visualisation techniques of the AVIE 360-degree 3D cinema.
The gallery is located on the 8th floor of the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) at CityU, and the opening is on Saturday, 4 February, 2012, with a reception at 6pm.
Gallery 360 builds on AVIE (Advanced Visualization and Interaction Environment), a unique 360-degree immersive 3D projection experience first developed by Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Dean of CityU’s School of Creative Media, and his associates at the UNSW iCinema Research Centre in Sydney. AVIE is now incorporated into the research programme of the CityU Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualization and Embodiment (ALiVE).
The opening exhibition will showcase the Asian premiere of There Is Still Time..Brother, a panoramic interactive ‘war’ film made by the world-famous Wooster Group theatre company from New York. Taking an intriguing new approach to cinema, an audience member controls the projection window to reveal only a portion of the Wooster Group’s densely constructed 360° panoramic film.
The officiating guests at the opening will include Professor Shaw, Professor Johannes Goebel, Founding Director of EMPAC, the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, and Ms Elizabeth LeCompte, Director of the Wooster Group, New York.
In addition to the opening reception there will be presentations by Professor Goebel and Ms LeCompte at 3:30pm and 5pm respectively at Lecture Theatre 3 (M5050), CMC.
All are welcomed to attend the reception and seminars, and may RSVP by emailing cmcinfo@cityu.edu.hk
There Is Still Time..Brother will be exhibited from 4 February to 3 March 2012, Monday to Saturday, 12pm to 8pm. Admission is free.
In the coming months, Gallery 360 will host a number of unique and exciting exhibitions, providing a variety of experiences from cultural heritage to paintings and literature.
In March, there will be an exhibition featuring a research project by ALiVE titled “Heaven on Earth: Inside the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang” which immerses visitors in the quintessential heritage of the area’s Buddhist temples, an art treasury abounding with murals, statues and architectural monuments. In addition, internationally renowned artists such as Miao Xiaochun (China) and Jean Michel Bruyère (France) will be featured in April and May.
The exhibitions are open to the public for free. For more information, please call 3442 6553 or visit www.cityu.edu.hk/cmc.
