Inspiring, fun-filled activities at Book Fair

Book launches for new titles including the CityU Mastermind Series and the CityU Legacy Series and thought-provoking seminars featured at the booth operated by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) Press at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2023 from 19 to 25 July. Several new releases covered stories of CityU professors, scholars and alumni were also showcased at the seven-day event.

Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityU Council Chairman, and Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President at CityU, showed their support by reading through some of the new titles during a visit to the CityU Press booth on the first day of the fair (19 July).

Two book launches and seminars under the “CityU Mastermind Series” aim to strengthen the connection and interaction between authors and readers. Dr Sunny Chai Ngai-chiu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, spoke about the launch of his book Sunny Chai: Managing Balance on 19 July. Dr Chai, who is an Honorary Fellow of CityU, discussed challenges he has encountered in his life.

Another book launch, on 21 July, will feature Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, President of the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong and a CityU Honorary Fellow, talking about his book Allen Shi: The Uncommon Journey and his views on innovation.

CityU Press showcases new releases at this year’s Book Fair.

In addition, readers can learn more about the relationship between academic pursuits and society through interviews with renowned scholars featured in the CityU Legacy Series. This year’s new release, Zhang Longxi: Walking Alone Among The Classics, explores the life of Professor Zhang Longxi, former CityU’s Chair Professor of Comparative Literature and Translation, through personal interviews with him and his students and friends plus references to his lectures.

In addition, CityU Press, together with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD), released The Treasure-trove of Privacy – Understanding Your Personal Data Privacy, which introduces the Data Privacy Law in an easily understandable manner and uses examples from daily life to deepen readers’ understanding.

Furthermore, CityU Press and PCPD will hold a book launch and seminar on “Cyberbullying and Doxxing Behaviour Involving Students” on 24 July. The speakers, including Ms Ada Chung Lai-ling, Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, and Mr Chu Ka-tim, Chairman of the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education and Vice-Principal of Hong Kong True Light College will discuss the current doxxing phenomena.

CityU Press will showcase academic and professional titles including China studies, Hong Kong studies and social sciences subjects, as well as hold a CityU fan quiz for visitors. Winners of the quiz will receive cartons of CityU milk and CityU Press souvenirs.
