The President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) discussed recent developments of the University at “A Dialogue with the President” co-hosted by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) and the Convocation on 17 November at the Eminence Galaxy – Alumni Function Room.
Professor Way Kuo briefed alumni on recent achievements in rankings, the development of the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), and University’s strategic plan at the interactive discussion facilitated by alumnus Mr Clovis Lau Koong-yep, Convocation Chairman and Council member.
Professor Kuo shared that the CityU’s rising status in global rankings was recognition of the strength and excellence of our research, faculty, students and graduates. The University was now ranked 55th in the world, 7th in Asia, 3rd in Hong Kong and 4th in the world under 50 years of age in 2016, according to Quacquarelli Symonds.
Professor Kuo added that SVM would commence a six-year bachelor’s degree programme in veterinary medicine in the academic year 2017-18. The programme would promote One Health and sustainable development, and expand education choices and career paths for the youth. He added that this programme had been jointly developed by SVM and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University to meet the Australasian Veterinary Board Council’s accreditation standards.
Internationalisation was one of the key areas set out in the University’s Strategic Plan. Professor Kuo shared a number of initiatives to enhance students’ international exposure including the global work attachment scheme and non-local exchange programmes. He shared that 50% of undergraduate students had participated in overseas exchanges and 65% was the target for the coming years.
Distinguished alumni and Council members Mr Andrew Fan Ka-fai and Dr Peter Ho Ka-nam attended the event to show their support. Also joining the event were Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development & External Relations); Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development & Alumni Relations); Professor Cheng Shuk Han, Associate Dean of SVM; Dr Raymond Chan Kwok-hong, Director of Communications and Public Relations Office; and Ms Alice Chan Yuen-ching, Acting Director of ARO.
