President discusses innovation and quality at Guangdong congress

Professor Way Kuo, President of City University of Hong Kong, delivered a keynote speech on “Quality and Innovation” at the 2015 Annual Congress on Quality Management in Guangdong cum Conference on Collaboration of Quality Management in Pan-Pearl Delta Region in Guangzhou on 17 September.

Professor Kuo was also speaking in his capacity as an Academician of the International Academy for Quality and Member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Themed “Made in China 2025 and Quality Development in Pan-Pearl Delta Region”, the event was hosted by Mr Chen Gang, Vice-Minister of General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of PRC (AQSIQ), and Mr Liu Zhigeng, Vice-Governor of Guangdong Province.

The congress drew more than 300 officials and professionals from the AQSIQ and Guangdong Provincial Government, as well as 10 local departments of the Administration of Quality and Technology Supervision, industrial associations and corporations in the Pan-Pearl Delta region. Xinhuanet was a co-organiser of the event.

Professor Kuo pointed out that only quality-based innovations were valuable, and meaningful innovations could enhance our quality of life. He reviewed the development of quality management and said that the quality management concept initially applied to manufacturing and service sectors had extended to other fields, including the education sector.

When discussing the advancement of higher education in the world, Professor Kuo stressed the equal importance of teaching and research. He added that “heartware” had significant influence on education quality and there was room for improvement in teaching, research and administration in the universities in the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
