Postgraduate students, undergraduates, academics and researchers at the 1st BCH Students’ Conference on 14 January had the chance to reflect on current advancements in all aspects of chemistry, biology and environmental sciences.

Titled “Science! Embrace an Innovative Future” and organised by the Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), participants exchanged research ideas and fostered collaboration at the Conference. In addition, an oral presentation and a poster presentation session was hosted by BCH postgraduate students.

“This conference is very impressive because it has been organised by the faculty and students,” said Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, at the opening ceremony. “You have contributed a lot to the totality of innovation,” he told them.

Professor István Horváth, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Conference and Head of BCH, said he hoped that a similar conference could be held again. “The students can experience what it means to organise a conference, from the ideas to the way of delivery,” he said.

The conference was one of several major events specifically for BCH students. In addition, there will be a keynote lecture presented by Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Associate Dean (Research) at the Faculty of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology and Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Lo is a pioneer in the field of fetal health and development. He has developed numerous methods for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for developmental disorders. He is also a member of BCH advisory committee.
