Executive councillor discusses sustainable development for Hong Kong

The Honourable Bernard Chan Charnwut (right photo, right), Deputy to the National People’s Congress of China and Executive Councillor of Hong Kong, discussed sustainable development for Hong Kong’s politics and economy in a seminar jointly organised by School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) and Alumni Relations Office (ARO) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 24 September.

Mr Chan and Dr James L K Sung (right photo, left), Academic Coordinator of SCOPE, reviewed the current political and economic conditions in Hong Kong in the seminar titled “Political and Economic Sustainable Development in Hong Kong”. More than 240 CityU/SCOPE teachers, students and alumni registered for the event.

They also discussed the future changes of Hong Kong’s political and business environment and ways to grasp the opportunities for sustainable development to build a better tomorrow for the local community.

Mr Chan said he believed that Hong Kong would face a shortage of professionally trained public administrators in the coming five to fifteen years, which will pose a great challenge to Hong Kong.

Many young professionals and business executives hesitate to join the public administration sector as they have to give up their own careers due to the lack of a “revolving door” policy in Hong Kong.

In addition, few training opportunities are currently available for professionals outside the public administration sector. To solve this problem proactively, Mr Chan suggested Hong Kong should develop more public administrators by offering more training.
