Five students who combined imagination with an excellent knowledge of France and Hong Kong clinched the championship for their creative work at City University's First Multimedia Ad Contest Awards Presentation Ceremony held on 28 February.

The Multimedia Ad Contest, the first of its kind at a local university, was organized by the French Section of CityU's Division of Language Studies. The contest aimed to promote creativity and the application of multimedia technologies to reflect the multi-faceted life of France and Hong Kong. The four categories in the contest were: websites; photo albums; short movies / animation / commercials; and poster designs.

The themes this year were "Visit France Year 2003" or "Visit Hong Kong Year 2003". The winner in each category was awarded a certificate and a HK$2,000 cash prize, with an extra HK$2,000 for the overall champion. The prizes were sponsored by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong. Presenting the prizes, Mr David Santandreu, Lecturer in the French Section in the Division of Language Studies, thanked all the participants and likened the contest to the Oscars ceremony to encourage students to keep on producing high quality work. "When we go to the Oscars, you have a lot of beautiful movies competing for the best movie award. Unfortunately, you have only one winner," he said.

The talented champions are Ms Yoko Leung, year two student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Studies, in the website category; Mr Kirque Leung, year two student in the School of Creative Media, in the photo album category; Ms Jasmine Wong, part-time SCOPE student, in the short movie/animation/commercial category; Mr Rocky Fong, year one student in the Faculty of Business, in the poster category. And congratulations go to overall champion Ms So Ka Sin, year three student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for her animation Mr Chopsticks, who introduces viewers to some traditional Hong Kong delicacies, such as fish balls, pineapple buns and dim sum. The Hong Kong Tourism Board's homepage is to be hyperlinked to Ms So's winning animation.

Contest adjudicators included Mr Patrick Coustance, Attache de Cooperation pour le Francais, Consulate General of France in Hong Kong; Mr John Dockerill, Provisional Provost of the College of Higher Vocational Studies; Miss Yolanda Chan, Manager Hong Kong and South China, French Government Tourist Office; Mr Andy Chan, Graphic Designer, Green Magazine; Mr Alfred Ko, award winning photographer and founder of the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers; and Ms Wanda Lau, Acting Head of the Division of Language Studies.
