The “Kong kids” phenomenon has aroused widespread concern in Hong Kong. Many children and teenagers in Hong Kong are considered rather narcissistic, perceiving themselves to be the most important and powerful person in a family. What contributes to this narcissism? How do “monster parents” or “helicopter parents” affect the development of their children’s personality?

Dr Annis Fung Lai-chu, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Social Studies at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has conducted a large-scale study assessing the narcissism index of nearly 10,000 primary and secondary students in Hong Kong. The study also investigates how different parenting styles influence children’s narcissism traits.

At the press conference, Dr Fung will discuss the findings of her study and compare the narcissism index of Hong Kong teenagers with comparable studies in the US, UK and Australia. She will also analyse how different parenting styles contribute to children’s narcissism.

In addition, an expert frontline social worker will share her experience working with narcissistic youths and their parents.
