Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the HKSAR Government, aims to attract the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong’s institutions.

The Department of Media and Communication (COM) now invites applications for admission to PhD programmes at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme in 2027/28.


Early Recruitment

COM's Early Recruitment Deadline: 15 November 2026 (12:00 noon, GMT +8 hours).

How to apply to the Department of Media and Communication, CityUHK?
Step 1:
Applicants should first submit an initial application at the RGC's Online Application System to obtain an RGC reference number.

Step 2:
Applicants are then required to submit a full application, including supporting documents, to CityUHK's Online Admission System, selecting Media and Communication and quoting the HKPFS Reference Number.

Please note that applications for HKPFS candidates require a research proposal and a vision statement. You are strongly advised to contact our faculty members as early as possible to discuss your research plans.

After the early recruitment deadline, you are still welcome to apply. Admission will depend on quota availability.


Funding and Scholarship

The Fellowship provides awardees with a monthly stipend of HK$28,700 (~US$3,680) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$14,400 (~US$1,840) per year for a maximum of three years.

For Fellowship awardees who are admitted to a 4-year PhD programme, CityUHK will provide a monthly studentship at the same level as the RGC Fellowship for their fourth year of study.
