According to the Nature Index 2019, CityU has accomplished good results in the chemistry aspect, being ranked 53rd in China and the second best in Hong Kong. Nature Index provides statistics regarding research articles published in 82 high-quality science journals. These journals cover four aspects, including chemistry, earth & environmental sciences, life sciences, and physical sciences. The Nature Index is first announced in 2014 and reviewed annually.

Dr Chun Kit Kwok, Assistant Professor from the Department of Chemistry, has received the “Croucher Innovation Awards” presented by the Croucher Foundation for his research on RNA (ribonucleic acid).

Professor Xunli Wang, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, has been elected Fellow of the Neutron Scattering Society of America for his “innovative neutron scattering studies at the interface between condensed matter physics and engineering materials science, and for the development of new neutron instrumentation to enable these seminal studies”.

Professor Hua Zhang, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials in the Department of Chemistry, has been elected Foreign Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences in recognition of his highly interdisciplinary research.

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Neutron Scattering Science and Technology Joint Laboratory, co-established by CityU and the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was officially commissioned on 15 January 2020, revealing the milestone of CityU contributing to the scientific advancement in the region.

Our first and the long-awaited CityU Science Challenges have successfully taken place on 4 and 11 January 2020, when over 500 participating secondary school students challenged themselves on the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics on CityU Campus.
