COM Co-Hosting the Strive and Rise Program: Inspiring Underprivileged Secondary School Students to Pursue their Dreams in Media

Over 60 secondary school students attended the Media Career Sharing Session and Facilities Tours
On 13 August 2026, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) co-hosted the Media Career Sharing Session and Facilities Tours. The event welcomed over 60 secondary school students participating in the Strive and Rise Scheme under the Chief Secretary for Administration. COM has trained many of the finest media professionals in Hong Kong, and is always working to identify and cultivate young talent from all walks of life. In this session promising students engaged in an immersive learning experience focused on digital media, gaining insights into becoming media studies experts and preparing for future career planning.

The session began with an opening speech from the event coordinator, COM Adjunct Professor Dorian Ho, who encouraged students to seize this valuable opportunity to learn from media professionals. Professor Tat Kei Alfred Ho, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, also highlighted how these events benefit students by helping them explore their interests. The event also featured COM Head and Professor Chris Shen as an attendee.
To broaden understanding of media and communication studies, three versatile lecturers from COM including Miss Katrina Yu, Ms. Amanda Lam, and Mr. Yimu Zhang conducted an interactive workshop. During this session, students explored anchoring, journalism, and photography, with some having the opportunity to sit in front of a camera to learn anchoring firsthand.

Beyond the facilities tours, the program delved into Artificial Intelligence (AI) developments in communication fields. Assistant Professor Prof Vincent Wang shared case studies on AI apps that benefit public usage, inspiring students to think creatively and innovate in the future.
