29 Jan 2026 (Thu)

On 27 January 2026, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted a PhD students workshop titled “Data and Reflections on Uses of Artificial Intelligence in Strategic Communication Research,” led by Distinguished Visiting Professor Jeff Niederdeppe from Cornell University. He emphasized that additional considerations will play a crucial role in the integration of AI within strategic communication.

As communication scholars and practitioners increasingly incorporate AI technologies into their work, Professor Niederdeppe examined the benefits and challenges of using AI for various methodological and practical applications in communication research. His discussion covered areas such as content analysis, message and survey design, interactive messaging through chatbots, and synthetic sampling. Citing evidence and insights from ongoing research projects, he addressed key issues facing the field amidst the rapid advancement of these technologies.

Currently serving as Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Development at the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Communication at Cornell University, Professor Niederdeppe has been recognized as a Top 1% Scientist in Public Health by Stanford University. He leads the Health Communication Research Initiative (HCRI) and co-directs the Collaborative on Media and Messaging for Health and Social Policy (COMM-HSP). His work is dedicated to producing, supporting, and disseminating innovative, high-quality research aimed at advancing health equity.
