COM champions healthy aging through Intergenerational E-Triathlon Competition

01 Dec 2025 (Mon)

On 22 November 2025, the Department of Media and Communication (COM) and the Institute of Digital Medicine at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), in collaboration with the Golden Age Foundation and MedMind Technology Limited, jointly organized the Intergenerational E-Triathlon Competition for older adults and young participants in Hong Kong.

Held at D·PARK in Tsuen Wan, the event brought together 558 individuals from all walks of life to experience the E-Triathlon games, comprising of swimming, cycling, and running. Around 215 participants, including older adults, individuals with disabilities, and children, took part in the competition, with some competing individually and others participating in pairs.

As one of COM’s first community-engaged events dedicated to supporting active aging, the competition also served as an important platform for research and collaboration. Ms. Dandan Wang, a first-year PhD student in COM, and Dr. Huanyu Bao, an RGC Junior Research Fellow, worked closely with our community partners to lead the research design and on-site implementation. Their contributions ensured that the event not only fostered intergenerational participation but also generated valuable insights to inform future digital health and ageing initiatives.

“Through our research, we found that games can be a powerful way to motivate older adults to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors,” said Prof. Edmund Lee, Associate Professor at COM. “What was truly fascinating was witnessing the display of intergenerational connection as older adults and young children gamed together”.

The event was graced by Prof. Chi-Hou Chan, Vice-President of the Community Engagement Office at CityUHK; Mr. Nelson Yip, Founder and CEO of the China Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association; and Mr. Lawrence Lui, President of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East. The initiative was supported by Chinachem Group and Connecting Hearts.

As part of COM’s ongoing work in promoting healthy aging and digital health engagement, the Intergenerational E-Triathlon reflects our commitment to community-focused initiatives.

Congratulations to all the winners of the competition!
