On October 8, 2025, Professor Ye LU from School of Journalism, Fudan University, delivered a seminar entitled “情感公眾與流量時代的文化回嘴’——以小紅書非虛構影像為案例 (Emotional Publics and Cultural 'Talking Back' in the Era of Attention Economy: A Case Study of Non-fictional Visuals on RedNote)” . Professor LU’s primary research interests include digital news production, audience and media communication effects, new technologies, visual culture, everyday life, and the dissemination of public art.

This seminar introduced the interdisciplinary concept of "talking back"—which, according to cultural studies scholars like Bell Hooks, refers to the process by which marginalized or subordinate groups actively and consciously challenge mainstream cultural narratives, voice their own perspectives, and reaffirm their ideas and cultural values through cultural expression. This concept emphasizes agency within cultural interactions. In practice, it is embodied in the ways communities and small groups redefine identity and cultural history through activism or diverse expressions in the domain of cultural arts, carrying the transformative potential to reshape the broader sociocultural landscape.

Professor LU highlighted that, although non-fiction visual culture are not the mainstream content on RedNote—a digital platform centered on lifestyle and interests—creators and users nonetheless utilize the platform for personal expression, thereby cultivating a youth community culture characterized by the aesthetics of the front-facing camera. This case study revealed the significance of emotionally-driven, collaborative public cultural practices.

The seminar attracted nearly 20 attendees, including faculty members, doctoral students, and scholars, fostering an engaging and intellectually stimulating environment.
