COM Distinguished Lecture Series: A Look at Complex System, Simulation and Communication Studies by Prof Yan GE

06 May 2024 (Mon)

On May 6, 2024, Professor Yan GE, a Professor at the School of Media and Communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and an Adjunct Researcher at the Center for Information and Communication Studies, Fudan University, delivered a seminar titled "A Look at Complex Systems, Simulation, and Communication Studies" at the City University of Hong Kong. In his presentation, Prof. Ge discussed the significant incorporation of complex systems theory into communication studies using the Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) simulation method. He addressed the history of complex systems theories, their relationship with simulation studies, and the contributions these methods can make to the field of communication. Prof. Ge emphasized that complex systems are inherently interdisciplinary and complex by nature. He argued that the simulation method provides a mechanism-based explanation for various communication phenomena and aids in understanding non-linear opinion evolution and the context-dependent causality between information and behavior. Moreover, Prof. Ge highlighted the potential of simulations to offer new avenues for constructing theories and formulating policy suggestions. However, he also noted the challenges faced by ABM modelers, particularly the skepticism from traditional empirical researchers and the difficulty in gaining acceptance in discipline-specific journals. The seminar attracted over 20 individuals, including faculty members, Ph.D. students, and scholars from various disciplines.
