09 Oct 2023 (Mon)

On October 9, 2023, Mr. Milos MOSKOVLJEVIC, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Media and Communication at City University of Hong Kong, conducted a seminar titled "Internet Memes as Actants of Political Participation and Historical Imagination-The Peculiar Case of Hong Kong Society." In his presentation, Mr. Moskovljevic focused on the influence of political internet memes on offline political participation, particularly in the context of Hong Kong. He proposed that the expressive effects of meme usage have a more significant impact than their reception effects. The seminar was divided into two key studies. The first one was a survey-based exploration of political participation following the Anti-Extradition Bill protests in Hong Kong. The second study examined the historical re-imagination of events through internet memes during these protests. Mr. Moskovljevic offered fresh insights into the interplay between political participation, historical imagination, and internet memes. This seminar attracted around 20 faculty members, Ph.D. students, and scholars from various academic fields.
