Health and Safety

Medical insurance

Non-local students are required to have comprehensive insurance coverage throughout their studies in Hong Kong. This must include:

  • Travel insurance
  • Personal accident coverage
  • Medical expenses (for both accidents and non-accidents)
  • Hospitalisation
  • Emergency evacuation/repatriation

You have two options for meeting this requirement:

  1. Purchase your own insurance before departing your home city, or
  2. Enrol in the Group Personal Accident and Medical Benefits Insurance Plan for Non-local Students offered by the University.

Student Support

International Friends Club (IFC)

The Global Engagement Office (GEO) at CityUHK administers the International Friends Club (IFC) to:

  • Foster international friendships
  • Help exchange students acclimate to CityUHK and Hong Kong
  • Provide local students with opportunities to enhance their language and cross-cultural communication skills

Hong Kong is a vibrant city full of surprises! The Hong Kong Tourism Board offers excellent resources to help you explore your new home.

Currency

Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). Current denominations include:

  • Banknotes: HK$1,000, 500, 100, 50, 20, and 10
  • Coins: HK$10, 5, 2, 1, 50 cents, 20 cents, and 10 cents

Since 1983, the Hong Kong dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at approximately US1=HK7.80. For the most current exchange rate, please check with your bank.

Living Expenses

Transportation

Hong Kong boasts an efficient and affordable public transportation network. Options include:

  • Buses
  • Mini-buses

  • Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system
  • Cross-harbour Star Ferry
  • Ferries to outlying islands

Most public transportation (except taxis) accepts payment via Octopus Card, making travel throughout the city convenient.

For your journey from Hong Kong International Airport to CityUHK, located in the Kowloon city centre, the following is for your reference:

  1. Public Transportation (via bus or MTR)
    • Estimated fare: HK$120 (approximately US$15)
  2. Taxi Service
    • Estimated fare: HK$350 (approximately US$45)
