Accommodation

Please visit the website of the Student Residence for the current residence fee.
Students must settle a non-refundable and non-transferable confirmation fee before the deadline to indicate their acceptance of the offer upon receipt of the on-campus housing offer.
No, you cannot apply for a single room. The Student Residence (Ma On Shan Compound) houses undergraduate students in shared double rooms solely. Students who have physical disabilities, medical reasons or special needs for a double room of single occupancy should specify and upload the supporting documents in the hall application for case-by-case consideration and arrangement. There is no guarantee and subject to room availability. Successful applicants will be required to pay the hall lodging fee double.
The confirmation fee is non-refundable and non-transferable under all conditions.

The Student Residence for exchange students is situated in Whitehead, Ma On Shan (Video Tour to SR, Choi Sha Street, Ma On Shan). It will take approximately 35-40 minutes to commute from this student residence to City University of Hong Kong.

Application

You can apply for our Exchange Programme for Semester A or Semester B. Click here for the application deadlines.
We only accept exchange students nominated by our partner universities. Please contact the exchange programme coordinator or the international office at your home university for nomination.

Course Selection

Unless otherwise determined by the Senate for a specific course or programme, the medium of instruction and assessment at the University is English.
You are required to make your study plan and submit it via the online application system. The CLASS College Office may assist in pre-registering the approved courses for you, subject to availability, fulfilment of prerequisites, and timetable clashes.
The course add/drop information will be sent to students prior to the start of the web registration period.
Students should take 12 to 18 credits in a semester.

You can change your course selection during the 3-week add/drop period, which starts 2 weeks before the commencement of the new semester. Confirmation is subject to approval by the concerned department of the CLASS College Office.

Insurance

It is mandatory for non-local students to have suitable and adequate insurance covering travel, personal accidents, medical expenses (accident and non-accident), hospitalisation, and emergency evacuation/repatriation throughout the entire period of their study in Hong Kong. Students are required to either purchase the insurance on their own before they leave their home city or, if they are unable to do so or wish to have additional insurance coverage, enrol in the Group Personal Accident and Medical Benefits Insurance Plan for Non-local Students contracted by the University.
During the online pre-enrolment process, exchange students are required to complete the declaration on insurance agreement. Students may agree to enrol in the insurance plan for non-local students arranged by City University of Hong Kong or declare that they have purchased an insurance plan at home which covers travel, personal accidents, medical expenses (accident and non-accident), hospitalisation, and emergency evacuation /repatriation that will be valid worldwide, including Hong Kong.

Transportation

City University of Hong Kong is easily accessible by various forms of public transportation. During the Orientation Week, the University may offer a free airport shuttle bus service from Hong Kong International Airport to the Student Residence. Details about the shuttle bus schedule and other alternative means of transportation will be sent to you by the Global Engagement Office prior to your arrival.

Visa

The Global Engagement Office will apply for the study visa on your behalf in Hong Kong. In general, unless a person has the right of abode or right to land in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), he/she requires a visa/entry permit to study in the HKSAR. While each application is determined on its individual merits, an applicant should meet normal immigration requirements (such as holding a valid travel document with adequate returnability to his/her country of residence or citizenship; having a clear criminal record and raising no security or criminal concerns to the HKSAR; having no likelihood of becoming a burden on the HKSAR, etc.) as well as the relevant specific eligibility criteria detailed here before he/she may be considered for the grant of a visa/entry permit. It should be noted that the eligibility criteria may be subject to change from time to time.

The visa approval process may take up to 8 weeks or more for a student visa/entry permit to be processed. It will take even longer if the required supporting documents are incomplete. You are advised to submit the visa application documents to the Global Engagement Office as early as possible.
No, only the original visa application forms are accepted by the Immigration Department of Hong Kong. You must send all the documents by courier or post to the Global Engagement Office as early as possible in order not to delay your study at City University of Hong Kong.
You must enter Hong Kong as a visitor and, after collecting the visa label in Hong Kong, leave Hong Kong and re-enter with your visa label to activate your student status.
The student visa is only valid for entering Hong Kong. You must apply for a separate visa to enter Chinese Mainland after your arrival in Hong Kong. For details on applying for a permit to enter Chinese Mainland, please visit here. You must consult the Embassy/Consulate of the other countries for visa requirements well in advance.
No, the University can only accept payment by credit card or bank draft.
Unless you have a Hong Kong Identity Card with the right of abode or the right to land in Hong Kong, you must obtain a visa/entry permit to study in Hong Kong.

Others

If you wish to open a bank account upon arrival, please bring along the following required documents to the bank:
  • City University of Hong Kong Student Card
  • Travel document (or Exit-Entry Permit for Chinese Mainland students)
  • City University of Hong Kong official letter of acceptance
  • Proof of residence in your home country (i.e. bank statement or utilities bill, in English or Chinese, issued to you within the past 3 months)
  • Proof of residence in Hong Kong (please request for residential proof at the Student Residence Office)
