In a further push into the mainland China market, a five-member delegation from CityU visited Wuhan in the province of Hubei , 5-8 July 2004. The main purpose of the trip was to ascertain the training needs of relevant Hubei provincial government offices and to explore possibilities for CityU to offer training programmes to Hubei civil servants.
CityU President, Professor H K Chang, and Professor Zhu Qingshi, President of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding, 13 June, to jointly establish a high level, joint research centre in Suzhou. The Centre will advance CityU’s research base into the booming Yangtze River Delta environs.
In a move to further promote CityU's provision of professional training and development programmes to meet the needs of the region, in particular the mainland, the CityU Professional Services Ltd establishes the CityU Professional Development Centre in June to facilitate development in this area.
CityU President Professor H K Chang and Deputy President Professor David Tong led a delegation of 13 staff members to Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, 7 June, to renew academic exchange agreement and to explore opportunities for multifaceted collaboration. The delegation received a warm welcome from a 22 staff member group led by Professor Zhang Junsheng and Professor Pan Yunhe, Chancellor and President, respectively, of the Zhejiang University.
CityU should consider making its presence felt in the western part of the Chinese mainland through close collaboration with Chongqing, according to Dr Zhu Guobin, who led a delegation of six to visit the rapidly developing municipality, 18-21 April.
CityU and the University of Paris Dauphine signed a cooperation agreement on 13 May to launch a joint Master of Science in Mathematics for Finance and Actuarial Science degree--the first of its kind in Hong Kong.
Families and friends gathered at CityU on 27 March to share the joy of 13 graduates of the Doctor of Education (EdD) and Master of Education (MEd) programmes jointly offered by CityU’s School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) and the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol.
The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) and the Faculty of Business participated in the Education and Careers Expo, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 19 to 22 February. The Expo showcased a wide range of CityU's continuing education and business Master's degree programmes to meet the market's growing demands.
In an effort to expand CityU's academic exchanges and cooperation with institutions in Europe, President H K Chang and Dr Zhu Guobin, newly appointed Director of the External Liaison and Cooperation Office (ELCO), paid a visit to three prestigious universities in France, Belgium and the UK respectively, from 14-20 January. The trip successfully created a framework upon which to explore opportunities for collaboration between these European universities and CityU.
CityU's School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) will launch certificate and diploma hospitality management programmes in March 2004 in partnership with the hotel management trainer Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (EI of AH&LA). These new initiatives target adults working in the industry and school leavers who aim to pursue a career in hotel management.
