Founded in 1984, CityU turns 20 this year. "If a centenary marks the first cycle of a university's development, CityU is still on its way. We have fared well thus far, with tremendous achievements in our first 20 years," said Professor H K Chang, President, at the Staff New Year Party on 28 January, kicking off the 20th anniversary year. 2004 is a time to look back and rejoice in our achievements, and to look forward to the future with a new role statement.
A "New Media Communication Workshop and Competition" organized by the Department of English and Communication (EN) will be held 25 October, (Saturday). This event has been developed expressly to introduce some Web page design and production techniques, as well as a taste of university life, to Form 6 and 7 students.

An exhibition by acclaimed Spanish contemporary artist, Josep Vernis, will be held 9 to 19 October at the CityU Art Gallery. CityU participants in RTH's Third Multimedia and Creativity Gallery¡XAsian Inter-University Multimedia Design Competition impressed the judging panel with these themes. And the producers of the two websites walked away with the Championship and My Favourite Award, respectively, in August.
In September this year,two students from Shanghai FudanU's School of Journalism will start the new semester in CityU's Department of English and Communication(EN).The three year agreement,stipulates that each U will send two undergraduate students to the other for one semester a year.
Preparing postgraduate students for the challenges and opportunities of working in a global environment was the focus of a postgraduate forum organized by City University's School of Graduate Studies on 26 February.
Because of the outbreak of SARS, also known as atypical pneumonia, City University, together with its seven local counterparts, suspended classes for two weeks, from 29 March to 13 April. Although the situation seemed alarming, the two-week suspension was an unexpected holiday for many CityU students, especially for the non-local students who live in halls.
Students from the Department of English and Communication (EN) won three prizes at the Asian Inter-University Multimedia Design Competition 2002, a contest organized by Radio Television Hong Kong.
More than 300 audience and performers danced to the rhythm of the Latin American beat at the University Circle, as the World City Cultural Night extravaganza drew to its finale. Held on 9 March in the Wei Hing Theatre, the extravaganza brought into the limelight an array of multi-cultural performances such as Scottish bagpipes, Australian songs, Indian dance, American jazz, Chinese music, English folkdance, Latin salsa and African drums, all under the theme of "Love and Harmony".
