New Issue of CITY CLASS Released

The latest issue of CITY CLASS, the magazine of CityU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, is released.

From the splitting of the atom to the development of artificial intelligence, these discoveries and advancements have revolutionised the way we live, work, and communicate for long. As science and technology continue to shake the world, the humanistic perspectives underneath very often go unnoticed. Whether the gap exists between these seemingly disparate fields hence becomes an enigma. At the forefront of this interdisciplinary movement, CityU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) set the stage to explore how the humanities and social sciences can inform and enrich our understanding of science and technology. Instead of merely keeping up with the trend, the priority is to harness the power of these advancements for the greater good in society.

In this issue of CITY CLASS, Prof Fiona NAH Fui-hoon of the Department of Media and Communication and also Convenor of CLASS Brain research cluster will share with the readers about her study in human-computer interaction, as well as the ethical issues in artificial intelligence. Prof Astrid HARTH of the Department of Chinese and History, who specialises in technical art history, will share how she uses imaging technology to explore the art conversion process, and how she bridges art and science. Prof ZHEN Shanshan of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences will provide her expert opinions on the psychological and cognitive neuroscience of human decision-making.

Technology brings convenience and improves quality of life. But it also allows criminals a means of carrying out illegal activities online against others. Prof Matthew MANNING, the new head of CityU’s Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SS), tells us his plans to set up a crime science programme that focuses illegal activities connected to future technologists. While new technological innovations are needed to prevent future crimes, a novel approach is also required to understand criminal behaviours better through research-based rehabilitation programmes. The Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) and SS join hands together to introduce positive psychology into Psychological Gymnasium in order to enhance the well-being and rehabilitation of persons-in-custody. The fruitful collaboration is now recorded in CSD’s latest publication Gripping Insights and a recent sharing forum.

CLASS faculty members are passionate about teaching and striving to cultivate transformative learning experiences and pedagogical innovations. New faculty Prof Vincent WANG, the Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Communication, shares with us his research in the interdisciplinary field in computational social media and how he wants to foster algorithm literacy among students.  Prof TSUI Lik-hang, another young and ambitious CLASS faculty, also sees the importance of interacting with his students. His endeavours of integrating digital humanities pedagogy in teaching Chinese history has earned him one of this year’s CityU Teaching Excellence Award. CityU’s quality teaching has inspired many students to achieve diversified development and to pursue their goals. It is perfectly demonstrated in the story of CLASS alumnus Sam MAN Cheuk-sum, who is now an all-rounder in local media platforms such as ViuTV. CLASS is committed to enrich students’ international exposure and learning experience, graduates and a student of the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between City University of Hong Kong and Columbia University share their transformative experiences of international education as well as valuable tips for academic and personal success. CLASS Advanced Methods School (CAMS) has returned this summer, bringing cutting-edge and multi-method training for local students, scholars and overseas researchers.
