College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) organises study tours to maximise students’ overseas experience through self-discovery, with opportunities to visit local organisations overseas.

Through the study tours, students are expected to acquire comprehensive interviewing skills; practice their presentation skills; and strengthen their leadership skills, interpersonal skills and a wide range of career-related skills in a global context.

Funded by CityU’s Career and Leadership Fund as a key event of the CLASS Elite Leaders Programme in 2018/19, a study tour to Taiwan was organised from 31 December 2018 to 5 January 2019. Associate Deans of CLASS, Professor Hon S CHAN and Dr Peppina LEE, and eight elite leaders attended the trip.

In January 2018, fifteen students took part in the College Study Tour to Taipei led by Professor Dennis Sing-wing Wong, Associate Dean (Student Life and Learning) of CLASS. In the study tour, participating students conducted a comparative study on the career aspirations of university students between Hong Kong and Taiwan. A total of 1,159 students in Hong Kong and Taiwan were interviewed. The aim of the study was to get their views on their future career development, including the factors they considered important for employment, salary expectations, willingness to work overseas, interest in starting their own business, and employment capabilities.

A press conference was held on 12 April 2018 to announce the results of the research project “A Study on the Career Aspirations of University Students between Hong Kong and Taiwan”  conducted by CLASS students and faculty member. The student participants gained useful experience from the research project and the study tour.
