Distinguished Economist Spots the Lodestar in China’s Economy

China’s economy stands at the crossroads, grappling with a complex web of challenges emanating from global and local uncertainties. Jointly with the Youth of Guangzhou and Hong Kong Association, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) invited Professor Justin LIN Yifu to deliver a public lecture titled “How to understand the opportunities and challenges in Mainland China” on 9 Sept 2023. Drawing an audience of over 500 students, faculty members, and guests, the seminar brimmed with insightful perspectives and thought-provoking discussions.

Professor Jennifer LIN Fen, CityU’s Associate Vice-President (Global Strategy) and Associate Professor of Department of Media and Communication, first welcomed and set the stage for the keynote speaker. Renowned as the former Chief Economist of the World Bank and currently serving as the Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University, Prof Lin brought his astute observations and expertise to the hall of audience. With a blend of business acumen and political insight, he demonstrated a data-driven approach, interpreting the key indicators such as GDP per capita and the significance to the mighty nations.

While identifying China’s current predicaments in the global economy and within its society, the speaker also presented a compelling forecast for future opportunities, such as advancements in employment and technology. “As the world watches with bated breath, China’s economic trajectory is poised to shape not only its future but also the international economy at large,” said Prof Lin.

All in all, such a wisdom exchange has left the audience inspired when navigating the ever-changing economy.
