CLASS Embraces Incoming Freshers at Orientation Ceremony

As the summer break unfurls its vibrant tapestry, it becomes a canvas for an array of orientation activities. On 30 August 2023, CityU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) warmly welcomed the newcomers at the College Orientation Ceremony, presenting a prologue of their riveting chapter at CLASS.

Professor Richard M WALKER, Dean of CLASS, commenced the event with a welcoming speech, highlighting the College’s features of interdisciplinary education and global awareness among its students. He explained that the significance of humanities and social sciences propels our fundamental understanding of how processes in the world operate. “I am confident to say the study of humanities and social sciences is exciting because our curiosity with humanity will never cease,” said Prof Walker. He also encouraged students to embrace curiosity in the promising journey of discovery, transformation and growth.

In an enlightening moment, Professor Daniel LYNCH, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education and Quality Assurance), gave an outline of CLASS’s study pathways and curriculum structure to help the freshers chart a course towards their academic destinations.

Following the College’s orientation, each of the six departments under CLASS held departmental orientations, providing crucial information about the students’ chosen programmes and facilitating face-to-face interactions with faculty members and classmates. Colourful as the orientation programmes are, attendees can envision a kaleidoscope of possibilities that ignite a spark of brilliance within the young minds.

It is common for freshers to find the transition to university life agitating, if not overwhelming. CLASS, therefore, offers the Freshmen Checklist as a helpful guide on its website. By utilising this resource, newcomers can become acquainted with the CityU community and quickly adapt to campus life.
