The job market for university graduates is often fierce and competitive. It has only become more so since the pandemic dealt a crushing blow to the economy. Notably, students face steeper challenges on the starting line in the career race.
City University of Hong Kong (CityU) resolves to prepare students for their future careers, organising CityU Employers’ Luncheon 2023 on 27 March at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It set out to foster stronger ties and collaborations with the corporate world, raise awareness among employers about CityU’s educational philosophy, and showcase our students’ outstanding inventions and achievements.
The event first started with an exhibition of students’ works. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) invited Eva Angela SEPUTRA and Kary CHAN Ka-wai to showcase their insights and fruitful learning experiences as the student representatives of CLASS. Students from the other six departments of CLASS also demonstrated their excellent projects by means of publications, multimedia outputs, and VR technology.
Chan, a Year-3 student from Department of Chinese and History (CAH), shared her local and global exposures. In 2022, she partook in a summer programme of Harvard University’s Institute for World Literature at Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany, through CLASS. As an ambassador of the College’s Buddies Club, she also organised activities and excursions for exchange students, putting her cultural heritage knowledge into practice.
Seputra, a Year-4 international student from Department of Media and Communication, displayed her photography and volunteer experience. On her poster, the German title “Wiedersehen” means the art of seeing again. With her lens as an agent, she hit upon a fresh perspective and captured the serendipitous moments in a foreign land.
As the exhibition wound up, employers, CityU’s faculty members, and students went on exchanging insights and mingling at the luncheon. Professor Richard M WALKER, Dean of CLASS, Professor Daniel LYNCH, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education and Quality Assurance) of CLASS, Professor CHING May-bo, Head of CAH, Professor KIT Chun-yu, Head of Department of Linguistics and Translation, Professor Alfred HO Tat-kei, Head of Department of Public and International Affairs (PIA), Professor Samuel HO Mun-yin, Head of Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SS) and Dr Dannii Yeung, College Outreach Coordinator and Associate Professor of SS, were also in attendance.
On the whole, the event proved a massive success in building bridges between the corporate world and the University, giving students a further boost in the career race.
