New Issue of CITY CLASS Released

The latest issue of CITY CLASS, the magazine of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, is released.

Research is core to all academic institutions. The beauty of research lies in finding truths and creating knowledge. Delivering impactful research findings means more than the glory of an academic and his/her affiliated institutions, but also contributes to the betterment of society. In this increasingly complex world, interdisciplinary research has become prevalent as it allows access to a broader range of expertise, perspectives and resources. Aligning with CityU’s strategy, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) has established three research clusters: One Health, Digital Society and Smart City, to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations.

In this issue, Dr Nicholas THOMAS, Dr TSUI Lik-hang, and Dr ZHANG Xiaoling, the convenors of the three respective clusters, speak of how they shape the direction of the College’s interdisciplinary research initiatives and why such an approach has become essential. Dr Edmund CHENG, Dr TSE Chun-yu, and Dr John LEE Sie-yuen lend a more personal touch to research studies, sharing the events that have fuelled their interest in respective research areas. Some faculty members are invited to introduce the applications of their works, such as helping dyslexic children recognise Chinese characters, providing insights into effective information poster designs for marketers and policymakers, and more.

Equally important is the College’s commitment to providing quality education and unleashing students’ potential. To provide CLASS undergraduates with a unique learning opportunity of conducting academic research, CLASS launched the Research Volunteer Scheme from September 2020. Let Dr Andus WONG detail the scheme and psychology student Alicia FAN Yu-yan share her experience participating in the scheme.

Last but not least, read through the story of Leung Fei-tung, our Chinese and History alumna and a professional Cantonese opera performer, and be inspired by her passion for this art form and how she has been working hard for her time to shine.
