Students will learn how the media contributes to the creation and shaping of culture and creative industries. This week-long study course uses two day-long fieldtrips to learn how the media contributes to the creation and shaping of culture and creative industries. We will study the ways in which cultural institutions (galleries, museums, archives) use media communications to develop and enhance their institutional identities, reputations, and those of their host towns, cities, or countries. There will be two day-long fieldtrips, one to include cultural institutions in London (for example, the Tate or V&A), the other to include regional arts institutions in Sussex, in order to compare and contrast the communication of culture on a global, national, and local scale. Whatever their disciplinary background and Summer School module, they will learn fieldwork research and communication skills. It is a course which is better suited when taken alongside another Arts and Humanities Summer School modules prior to this study week.
