Funded by donations amounted to JPY 9,600,000 from Japan’s One Asia Foundation, China and Asian Community in Retrospect and Prospect Lecture Series is a series of 29 lectures launched since September 2013 by the Department of Chinese and History (CAH). As of 8 October 2015, 19 lectures have been held and 10 more lectures will be organised until March 2016.

The lecture series aims to make an in-depth analysis of the multifaceted and diversified academic and cultural exchanges in Asia in modern times, to examine the history and cultural traditions that exist between the various cultures, economies and politics of Asian countries (particularly those in East Asia and Northeast Asia), and to explain the kind of cultural relations in which “there is something of each in the other”. The lecture series would be helpful in enhancing the mutual understanding and accommodation among East Asian countries.

With a matching grant of around HKD 200,000 from the University Grants Committee (UGC) in addition to the first donation of approximately HKD 400,000 in 2013, CAH have invited academicians from Japan, Korea, USA, Taiwan, Malaysia and Mainland China as well as local scholars to deliver lectures at CityU. These scholars are all experts in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, medicine, politics, sociology, film and television culture, etc.
