New students welcomed at CLASS orientation

The College extended a warm welcome last week to new students at different orientation activities.

About 200 new undergraduate freshmen were greeted by their mentors at the first mentor-mentee gathering. The new students will have more opportunities to mingle with their mentors and make new friends in freshmen luncheons and gatherings to be organised by the College during the semester.

At the College Orientation Ceremony, Professor Xiaowei Zang, Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) welcomed the new students to the CLASS family and introduced them to the College’s Associate/Assistant Deans and Heads of CLASS department.

Professor Zang encouraged the freshmen to learn more about the College through interacting with different people. “Our orientation week is a great way for you to learn more about our College, departments, and programmes, to meet our faculty and students, and most importantly to begin to think seriously how our College and departments can help you achieve the hopes and dreams you have for your life,” said Professor Zang. “The College is a community where you will grow and flourish. You will experience development and transformation in CLASS in the next four years!”

The new students were also advised by the Dean to share their knowledge, challenge themselves and the professors, and have fun in learning. In CLASS, students are empowered to transform themselves and make a difference through excellence.

At the Orientation Ceremony, students Titian Tam and Pinky Wong shared their rewarding learning experiences from the College Study Tour in Singapore and Summer Professional Internship in Australia. The co-curricular and internationalisation activities offered by the College fostered personal growth and all-rounded development in students.

Following the Orientation Ceremony was an advising session for the first-year students of the College. Dr Peppina Lee, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Curriculum, offered useful tips to help the new students get well prepared for the new challenges ahead. Dr Lee encouraged the freshmen to set their goals, explore possibilities and learn to make the right choices.

The new students were impressed by the orientation activities which made them feel welcomed and provided them with useful information on university life and learning. Some students expressed concerns on academic studies and major selection. The faculty advisors and staff members of the College will provide students with guidance and advice in support of their learning.
