A Closer Look at Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

What do university students study? It is a question asked by many secondary school students, especially about those fields outside their curriculum. Therefore, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) strives to offer prospective students a closer look at the promising journey of higher education in Hong Kong. On 26 November 2022, 47 students from King Ling College explored CLASS through various riveting activities.

To unfold scholarly wisdom with the participating students, Dr Nancy DAI, Assistant Professor of the Department of Media and Communication (COM), delivered a taster lecture on relational communication through technology. Dr Dai introduced several theoretical perspectives on computer-mediated communication, illustrating the concept with real-life situations and amusing examples. She wrapped up the lecture with an interactive discussion that successfully engaged students to reflect on their everyday experiences with social media.

Later, Dr Peppina LEE, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education and Quality Assurance) of CLASS, set out an overview of the programmes, study pathways, and exchange opportunities, solving students’ queries about admission to the academic programmes. She also highlighted that the flexibility of studying at CLASS opens up more possibilities for the students.

Prof LIU Yu-li, Head of COM, greeted the participants and gave an introduction before the facility tour. Led by student ambassadors and staff, they toured Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre to check out the learning facilities at COM, including the Omnimedia Digital Newsroom, 3D Virtual TV Studio, and Advertising Design and Shooting Studio. The on-campus activities allowed the prospective students to soak up the academic atmosphere and envision themselves at CityU CLASS.
