Two CLASS alumni awarded the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service 2015

Two alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) have been awarded the prestigious Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service for their enormous contributions to the society, according to the 2015 Honours List published in the Government Gazette on 1 July 2015.

Mr LAM Wing-lui and Ms LAI Na, the two awarded alumni graduated from the Department of Public and Social Administration (now retitled the Department of Public Policy), obtained the Master of Arts in Public and Social Administration with credit in 1998 and the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Administration & Public Management in 2007 respectively.

Mr Lam was a Chief Labour Inspector who took up the part-time day & evening study with sponsorship from his employer the Labour Department at the time he studied in CLASS. He worked as a volunteer to serve the community since 1972. The voluntary agencies included The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong and the Industrial Relations Institute. He joined the auxiliary force the Civil Aid Service (CAS) in 1974. Mr Lam had taken part in many essential CAS duties and operations - looking after Vietnamese refugee shelters, performing duties relating to the handover ceremony in 1997, serving the Cadet Corps, and commanding tasks during the SARS outbreak in 2003 to name a few. He was also a deputy regional commander before he retired from the CAS in April 2015.

Ms Lai has been awarded for her services in the social work sector. Being one of the founders of the Social Workers Across Borders (SWAB), an organization for social workers focused on post-disaster services, Ms Lai has actively participated in disaster services after the Sichuan Earthquake in 2008, the Taiwan Morakot Typhoon 2009 and the East Japan Tsunami 2011. Through the life education programmes in primary and secondary schools, Ms Lai shared her experience in disaster social services with the young generations. She also promoted disaster prevention activities in Hong Kong.

Congratulations to Mr Lam and Ms Lai for their outstanding achievements.
