Thirty-one secondary 4 to 6 students attended “LT (Linguistics and Translation) Wonderland 2019” from 22 to 26 July 2019 at City University of Hong Kong, and had much fun with the Department of Linguistics and Translation.
For 12 years in a row, the department offers aspiring students this programme to arouse their interest in the two disciplines, and to introduce the career prospects of this programme.
Some lectures were more academic while others were more to the practical side. These lectures let participants discover the nature of both the linguistics and translation disciplines, as well as the connection between them.
It featured a full week of exciting activities, including a series of expert talks covering numerous aspects in languages such as syntax, language and society, translation and media, studies of sounds, word formation, language change, Cantonese Romanisation system, film subtitling, mistranslations, computer-aided translation, and more. Through these light-hearted talks, not only did the participants get to know about translation and linguistics, but they also saw the interface between these two fields of study.
Current students majoring in translation also conducted a demonstration during a guided tour at the interpretation laboratory, which interested the participants a lot.
Informal meetings with the faculty members and current students helped participants understand how studying at the department is like. The lunch banquet on the last day provided another platform for the participants to obtain more information and inquire about the two majors offered by the Department, which are Linguistics and Language Applications, and Translation and Interpretation respectively.
Following the lunch banquet was the fun quiz session. By competing with each other in a friendly atmosphere, the participants showed that they had better understanding in the nature and applications of language than ever before.
