Co-hosted by Tsinghua University's School of Law and CityU's School of Law, the 'Conference on Legal Education in Greater China—Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty-First Century', held at CityU 21 and 22 May, was the culmination of a long, cooperative relationship between the two institutions. Mr C Raj Kumar, Deputy Director of City University's WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre and lecturer in the School of Law, has been awarded a research grant by Japan's Sumitomo Foundation. Mr Kumar's grant was in the category of Fiscal 2002 Grant for Japan-Related Research Projects. A centre that is unique in the Asia-Pacific region has been established at City University. The School of Law's WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre (WTODR Centre), launched in January 2002, is distinctive because it focuses not only on World Trade Organization (WTO) law but also on trade and commercial dispute resolutions and the links between the two, according to Centre Director Professor Peter Malanczuk.

While many scholars turn democracy into a gigantic, often culturally specific package of political and economic arrangements, Professor Edward Rubin, Professor of Law of the University of Pennsylvania, offered a different approach in his public lecture on 9 April. He pointed out that democracy consists of pragmatic political arrangements that align the incentives of government officials with the desires of people.
