An exuberant lion dance symbolizing the spirit of youth, power, strength and vitality marked the opening of the “International Conference on Youth Empowerment: A Cross-cultural Exchange” organized by the Department of Applied Social Studies (SS) on 17 May. Over 300 practitioners, scholars and students in social services from 34 cities in 14 countries flocked to CityU to share their findings and experiences in youth empowerment studies and initiatives at the conference that lasts until 20 May.
About 100 guests witnessed the inauguration of the new CityU Alumni Association (CityUAA) at a Happy Gathering for alumni on 29 April. In his address, Mr Patrick Lee, the re-nominated Chairman, pledged to build stronger ties among alumni in support of University development.
Twelve members of the Qingdao Arbitration Commission visited the School of Law on 13 May to receive a lecture on the WTO dispute settlement system.
On 10 May the University Grants Committee (UGC) made an announcement concerning the Academic Development Proposals (ADPs) submitted by the eight UGC-funded institutions for the 2005-08 triennium. CityU’s proposal to make creative media a growth / priority area was endorsed. Out of the 840 second year intake top-up places that UGC allocated to the eight institutions, CityU received 210 places, the second largest number.
