Dear Colleagues, The start of a new semester warrants some forward planning. Let me briefly lay out for you what I perceive to be the major issues facing the University in the next few months. All these issues require priority attention from my senior colleagues and me, with your understanding and support.
On the morning of 3 September, in the Multi-media Conference Room, CityU President, Professor H K Chang, Mr James Ng, Director of the Office of CityU Extension, and other staff members welcomed a team of special guests - Delegation from the People¡¦s Municipal Government of Harbin.
Over 1,000 alumni, their families, students and staff attended the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall for Caring Night on 1 September. More than a homecoming gathering, the event marked the launch of two initiatives-the Alumni Ambassadors Scheme and Alumni Giving Club -- to realize the twin goals of "Caring by serving." and "Caring by Giving".
Officially opening this month, the Applied Research Gallery and the Patent Database offers the business community one-stop access to CityU's latest technologies and know-how. The Applied Research Gallery, initiated by the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), features an array of applied research work. This is another way TTO aims to promote technology transfer to industrial and business communities and seek collaboration opportunities.
CityU opened its classroom doors to kids this summer, from 11 to 22 August, offering a Mini-U summer certificate programme for Primary Three to Primary Six students. The programme, organized by CityU Professional Services Ltd (CPS) and WiseNet Co, a Hong Kong-based education services company, attracted more than 50 children, aged 8 to 12, who enjoyed their first taste of university life on the CityU campus.
A new addition to the City University of Hong Kong Press—Building Design and Development in Hong Kong—was launched at CityU on 29 January.
"Life is the most precious gift we ever have, the problem is¡K we don't realize it until we are about to lose it!" said Katherine Leung on a bed at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Katherine, 26, a CityU graduate, now fighting against a deadly blood cancer, is waiting for a bone marrow transplant. If you wish to render your support, drop by the i-Cafe at the Academic Building today and tomorrow and donate several drops of your blood. You may be the one to bring Katherine a new life.
Has CityU made up its mind on how to deal with the looming crisis of the budget crunch, in the face of cutbacks in government funding? Is delinking our salaries from those of the civil service, with a consequential cut in our paychecks, already on the cards? If you have paid attention to what our President, Professor H K Chang, has said to the newspapers over the past few days, the answers seem to have been set in stone.
Mutual understanding is essential to promote economic cooperation between countries and to resolve trade disputes in a globalized economy. Building up bilateral rapport between member states is a fundamental working principle of WTO. In this context, CityU's School of Law received a rare guest from high office and a WTO diplomat.
