All teaching staff in the English Language Centre must have a first degree and a professional teaching qualification in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Positions in the Department

The department employs staff in a number of positions.

Instructors  Lecturer
Student Helpers  

Instructors
Instructors teach around 20 hours a week on our regular credit bearing courses.  They also take on an administrative role such as coordinating a course, an assessment or co-curricular activity or they may manage  part-time teachers or student helpers.  In addition, they serve on committees such as ‘Staff Development’ or ‘Quality Assurance’.  They can also be involved in projects from materials development to running newsletters.


Part-time Lecturers
Part-time Lecturers can teach up to 17 hours a week on our regular credit bearing courses.  They also take part in exam assessment.


Student Helpers
Student Helpers are employed for a whole range of tasks from running IELTS speaking practice tests to co-hosting English activities in the ELC’s lounge area.

 

Requirements for the positions

Instructors
Instructors

All applicants for this post must

  • have a first degree
  • have a diploma level qualification or above, e.g., a Dip Ed specializing in TESOL or the Cambridge RSA Dip TEFLA
  • have a minimum of two years’ post-qualification teaching experience at secondary level or above
  • have a native speaker level of English

Vacancies for Instructor I positions are advertised on the Human Resources Office website. If no English Language Centre vacancies appear there, we are not currently recruiting.


Part-time Lecturers
All applicants for this post must

  • have a first degree
  • have a diploma level qualification or above, e.g., a Dip Ed specializing in TESOL or the Cambridge RSA Dip TEFLA
  • have a native speaker level of English
  • have the right to work in Hong Kong

Preferred applicants will also have two years of teaching experience, including some experience at tertiary level.

Student Helpers
Student Helpers
Applicants for this post must

  • be fluent in English
  • have some computing skills
  • enjoy talking to people

We normally recruit our student helpers through the On-campus Service Learning Scheme (OSS) run by the Career & Internship Office.  We will advertise through the OSS.

Come and talk to our student helpers about the job.  You will find them in the Self Access Centre and at the counter in the General Office.
